Product Description
MAG-BUFF is an effective pH buffer used to provide alkalinity control in all aqueous based systems like freshwater, brines, brine polymer, completions and drill-in fluid systems. BARABUF pH buffer will dissolve in water and raise the pH of an aqueous system to 10.3. At pH 10.3, no more MAG-BUFF will dissolve. The remaining undissolved product will dissolve if the pH starts to fall and thereby act as a pH buffer. MAG-BUFF can be safer to use than caustic soda.
Application/Function
Helps maintain pH of system by buffering mechanism.
Effective in buffering pH in a saturated salt and high-hardness system.
Provides alkalinity and maintains the pH at 9 – 10.3 in absence of caustic soda or Lime
Alternative to lime for treatment of carbon dioxide contamination
Advantages
Safer and more suitable than caustic soda for controlling pH in polymer based systems.
Reduces the potential hydrolysis of polymers compared to when using caustic soda or lime.
Suitable for use in high temperature applications to stabilize the polymers.
Enhances temperature stability of polymers used in the system.
It also prevents thermal degradation by deterring acid hydrolysis
Unlike caustic and Lime, Overtreatment doesn’t harm the system. Maximum pH limit is 10.3
Recommended Treatment and Method of use
Treatment doses of MAG-BUFF ranges from 0.1 – 0.3 lb/bbl to maintain the pH and extend the temperature stability of organic polymers used in the system depending on the fluid system used, quality of make-up water and temperature of the system.
For use as a buffer in salt saturated systems, typical concentrations range from 1 – 3 lb/bbl with treatments depending on water chemistry, quantity and type of salt in drilling fluid..
Packaging
Packaged in 25 litre cans and 200 litre drums. Custom packaging is available on request.
Health & Safety
Exhibits no toxicity to human body and/or environment, MAG-BUFF may reach pH of 10.3 when come in contact with water so contact with bear hand should be avoided. Use facemask to avoid breathing of dust and eye contact.
